Le Château de Talmont-Hilaire

Description

In the heart of the pretty town, this château was founded in the 10th century, but it most famous for being the property of Richard I of England who became lord of Talmont and took possession of the castle in 1182 until his death in 1199.

Today it a popular attraction especially for children. The castle is mostly in ruins but the tower is still standing and can be climbed to the top. Take a guided tour (in English) or use the audio-guide, and then try one of the many medieval activities such as crossbow shooting, calligraphy and traditional games. You can also dress up in medieval costumes. Watch the birds of prey show, and on Wednesdays there are displays of jousting from ‘knights’ on horseback.
