Escal’Atlantic – Saint-Nazaire

Description

This is one of the more unusual visitor attractions you’re likely to come across; a recreation of life aboard a luxury ocean-going cruise ship built inside a Second World War submarine base!

Here you can witness the world of transatlantic liners from the heyday of cruise travel. It’s not cheap – tickets from adults are €13, €6,50 for children (4 to 14) – but it takes up to two hours to go round and is certainly a different kind of museum visit.

It describes itself as ‘the only interpretation centre about ocean liners in Europe’. That’s quite probably true! In what they organisers call a ‘self-guided tour’ you wander through 20 different areas that recreate a liner dining room, cabin, the captain’s bridge, the engine room and many other areas of a cruise ship. In one interactive game you even get the chance to ‘run’ a cruiser liner company in 1900. This is certainly an unusual museum…
