Maison de la Dame de Brassempouy

Description

The ‘dame’ or ‘lady’ in question is in fact a 25,000-year-old figurine of a woman carved out of a mammoth’s tusk and which was found in a cave in the village of Brassempouy in 1894.

Sadly the original is now in a museum in the Paris region. However this village museum (about 75 km east of Hossegor) has a replica of the ‘Dame’ (known as the ‘Dame de Brassempouy’ or ‘La Dame à la Capuche’ (‘The Hooded Lady’) and replicas of other similar finds from around Europe, plus some of the actual objects found in the Grotte du Pape cave.
