Description

The Courant d’Huchet is a little river that makes its languid way from lake Léon (about 30 km north of Hossegor) to the ocean.

The ‘bateliers’ are the boatmen who take you in their traditional flat-bottomed boats to see the wildlife and scenery of what some locally call the ‘Landaise Amazon’. In the summertime, the tours are popular, so make your reservation several days in advance! The shortest trip is 10 km and takes about 2 hours, there are also 3 and 4 hour tours.

The nature reserve “Réserve Naturelle du Courant d’Huchet” follows the river, so it possible to experience the changing flora and fauna on foot. The scenery is beautiful so it is well worth the effort. On a hot summer’s day, make sure you have appropriate footwear because as you approach the sea, the forrest trails turn into very hot sand!
