The Water Mirror of Bordeaux

Description

Located across from Place de la Bourse, between Quai de la Douane and Quai Louis XVIII, the Mirroir d’Eau (Water Mirror) is spectacular pool, designed by landscape artist Michel Corajoud and water technician Jean-Max Llorca, that alternates a mirror effect and artificial misting in an extraordinary way.

Inspired by scenes of a flooded Piazza San Marco in Venice, the pool is a feat of clever engineering – a granite slab 130 meters long and 42 meters wide, beneath it is an underground tank of 800 cubic meters. This feeds 900 injectors which change the slab from a shallow paddling pool to a sea of mist on a pre-programmed sequence.

The rhythmic changes in just two centimetres of water on the gigantic slab of granite make for a very magical location. Children adore playing here and it is a meeting place for lovers as well as people who enjoy putting their feet into the cool water in summer!

Located between the Garonne and beautiful 18th century façades, the Water Mirror of Bordeaux is today the most photographed site in the city and is also listed as a contemporary World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Also great place to start a wander around the shops and restaurants in the heart of Bordeaux afterwards.
